Murphy Bottom Ecological Project

Murphy’s Bottom site in South Buffalo Township, Armstrong County

Client: Duquesne University
Location: South Buffalo Township, Armstrong County, PA

LSSE provided engineering services to Duquesne University to assist them in determining site conditions and issues associated with development of an 80-acre site on the Allegheny River in South Buffalo Township, known as "Murphy's Bottom." The project was funded through PADEP. Duquesne University, in partnership with the PADEP and other stakeholders, proposed to develop research, training and support facilities on the site. The proposed site development was to include the removal of abandoned gravel mining and coal handling facilities, enhancement of the property for wildlife including terrestrial and aquatic species and educational facilities for environmental studies.

LSSE's scope of work included meeting attendance with project stakeholders, preparation of an existing conditions inventory, development of a mitigation and phased implementation plan, and determination of required permits and approvals and preparation of a final master plan document. The Scope also included evaluation of sedimentation load from the Allegheny River and its impact on Murphy's Bottom Pond if it was connected to the river to provide a backwater area for aquatic habitat. A conceptual plan for the connection was also prepared for review by PADEP.
